Shoot Week (Pt. 2)

By Zoe Goetzmann

It’s finally Shoot Week! Today, we had out first photoshoot for our still life objects (NAK London shoes).

Prior to arriving at the college, we all had planned to do a mockup of our final shoot. This process involved cutting stems from fake flowers and using an obscene amount of blue/white tack to stick the stems to the soles of the NAK shoes.

When it was time for our final shoot, our group spent the first few minutes of our session putting everything together. We had a few issues with getting the flowers to stay in place. It took all four us to make sure that the flowers stuck to the blue/white tack and that the butterfly clip which we planned to use was positioned in a way so that it would not weigh down the shoe.

Simplicity is everything. Our original plan was to hang the NAK shoe in the air using fishing wire and blue/white tack. However, on the photographer’s suggestion, both Silvana and Kate were able to hold up the bottom of the shoe, positioning their hands so that the heel was also visible and we were able to photoshop them out in post). We also spraying water onto the shoe to give an overall organic/natural look to the final picture. We also did another shot where we stuck the butterfly clip onto the side of the shoe which made the shoe/flowers really ‘pop’ off of the screen. The whole process felt like a real-life art project and I loved every minute of it!

In the end, I think we were all really happy/proud with the final result. Our group was able to work/collaborate really well with the photographer. Personally, I loved the effect that the water added to the shoe. I also loved our decision to attach some of the flowers to the side of the shoe (an idea that occurred a few minutes into our production shoot).

Despite a bit of stress that led up to the Still Life shoot, I am happy that our group managed to walk away with a final project that felt true to the product as well as showcased our creative/artistic abilities.
